Analysing a Second CD Cover

This is the CD cover for Indie artist Ed Sheeran. The background is an image taken from the actual music video to the song, of a girl standing with her back to the camera with her arms out to the side in an almost Biblical style. This is juxtaposed against the image, because you can see from the distance that she is near a city, and the actual song itself talks about drugs, homelessness and death, all very contrasting to the saintly image reference on the cover. The image has had an artist's brush stroke effect added, which makes it seem like less of an image and more of a drawing. This means the background is more visible, as a creamy, off-white colour.
  The colours of the background are plain; just in black and white, like the video is itself. This is intertextuality between the video and the cover, linkking the two together. This image is also used as the website as the background, another exaple of intertextuality and linking all the products together.
  The text on the cd cover comes in two parts; the name of the artist and the name of the song. The artist's name Ed Sheeran is written at the top left hand corner in a simple black type-writer font. The creamy-off white colour of the background shown between the brush stroke of the image and the type-writer font gives the impression of type on older paper, when typewriters were used.
  Next to the name of the artist is Ed Sheeran's logo, a pawprint. This symbol occurs on all of Ed's products including his website and posters. This pawprint lets the audience recognise the CD cover as Ed Sheeran's straight away, as they will link Ed Sheeran and the pawprint together. 
  The other piece of text on the CD cover is the name of the song. 'The A Team' is found at the bottom right corner of the cover, written in a font slightly different to the artist's name, so the audience can distinguish the difference between the two. It is also written in a plain black font, to tie in with the colour scheme of the CD cover. 
  The image definitely relates to the song, as the image is taken directly from the video. it gives a preconception of what the video and song is going to be like. The image gives a notion of a gritty realism narrative, which the video is, and the lyrics are about the hardships of a girl with little money who has to try and get by, by selling herself and drugs. 
  I think this CD cover is effective as it relates to the audience what the song and video is about, and despite the dull colours, is still eye-catching because of the striking image on the front. I believe this cover is different to other Indie artist's covers because usually on the front cover there is an image of the artist/band themselves, whilst in this one there is no sign of Ed Sheeran, but an image taken from the video itself.
